Parkinson’s disease is a syndrome or a group of symptoms characterized by four features –Tremor, Stiffness, Slowness of movements and Unsteadiness. It is a chronic, progressive degenerative disorder of the central nervous system. The symptoms of the disease set in by the age of 50 to 60 years.
Low levels of Dopamine in the brain also create other symptoms like gait and speech disorders, difficulty in swallowing, sleep disturbances, depression, dementia etc. in the course of disease. The symptoms vary from patient to patient and may appear slowly with no particular order.
According to the modern treatment protocols there is no complete cure for Parkinson’s disease. Dopamine agonists and drugs like Amantadine, Anticholinergic drugs, Levodopa and Carbidopa are the most popular treatments for Parkinson's disease.
