Diabetes is often referred to the group of metabolic disorders which is characterised by high blood glucose levels for prolonged duration. Though glucose is essential for proper functioning of our body, excess amounts can cause complications.
Types of Diabetes
Type 1 Diabetes: Pancreas fails to produce enough insulin. It is also known as Insulin dependent Diabetes Mellitus or Juvenile Diabetes. People usually develop the disease during their teenage or early adulthood.
Type 2 Diabetes: Pancreas is producing less insulin or body cells are not responding to insulin (insulin resistance). It forms approximately 90% of all diabetes, lifestyle is considered as the main cause for type 2 diabetes.
Gestational diabetes: Affects pregnant women who have no previous history of diabetes. Uncontrolled gestational diabetes can increase the risk of complication during childbirth.
Diabetes and Ayurveda
Ayurveda classifies Diabetes under the group of Prameha, which is characterised by excessive or turbid urination. It is further classified into 20 types on the basis of Doshas and symptoms. Treatment for each type of prameha is explained in detail from which the physician chooses the best for his patient.
Causes of Diabetes

Excessive intake of milk, milk products and curd. Curd should be consumed only during day and not regularly.

How do I know if I am Diabetic?
Diabetes is preceded by various symptoms which will help in early detection and better management.
Increased Sweating may be accompanied by body odour
Tendency to Urinate frequently: Primary precursor of diabetes is the excessive urination. Body tries to eliminate excess glucose through urine. Person may find the urine turbid(not clear) and burning sensation while urinating
Excessive thirst : One of the most common symptom is the thirst which cannot be quenched even after drinking plenty of water
Excess Hunger: Person always feels hungry as the body cells are not able to convert glucose into energy.
Wound/ sores takes long time to heal: Healing time increases drastically and prone to frequent infections
Feels exhausted and fatigue : Even though the person eats more, always feel tired, and sleepiness
Dry mouth and itchy skin: excess urination reduces moisture that leads to dryness and itching. Feels sweetness of mouth.
Burning sensation of palms and feet
Blurred vision: changes in the fluid levels of the body alters the focal length of the lens
The symptoms depend on the type of diabetes and may not be present together.
What is Prediabetes?
It is a condition where a person’s blood sugar level is higher than normal but not high to be classified as diabetic. The cells are becoming resistant to insulin. Managing diet and lifestyle during the prediabetic stage can delay the onset of Diabetes.
